GILEAD – An Ohio woman was killed Tuesday in an early morning tractor-trailer accident on Route 2.

Heather Hoffman, 30, of Brunswick, Ohio, was a passenger in the truck, which had just left Hancock Lumber on Route 26 in Bethel and was carrying a load of lumber west to New Hampshire, officials said. The truck was driven by Keith Falger, 31, of West Farmington, Ohio.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said the driver tried to negotiate a sharp turn about 6:30 a.m., and the truck hit a guardrail, snapped a utility pole and overturned on the passenger side.

Hoffman was killed in the accident. Falger was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway with minor injuries.

Assistant Chief of the Bethel Fire Department, Jim Young, said traffic was diverted over North Road, which runs parallel to Route 2 north of the Androscoggin River. Tractor-trailer drivers were told to seek alternate routes to New Hampshire border, he said.

Route 2 was closed for seven hours to clear it of debris and allow troopers to investigate.

McCausland said no charges were filed against Falger.
