FARMINGTON – The sixth annual Day of Service will bring University of Maine at Farmington students and faculty, community members and local businesses together Saturday to perform community service.

The one-day event, Dive In … Make a Splash, will see groups, including nearly 150 students, shuttled from the campus to 12 local projects. The day begins with registration at noon Saturday in Olsen Student Center on campus.

Projects include helping to paint, landscape, move gravel and clear brush at Academy Hill, Mallett and Weld schools; providing organizational and inventory skills to the Farmington Children’s School; painting and insulating Farmington Baptist Church, creating trails and building small bridges; judging children’s 4-H projects at the Farmington Fairgrounds and completing painting and yard work at the Franklin County Animal Shelter.

Help with the harvest at the Healthy Community Coalition’s Hope Community Garden and coordination of an on-campus change drive to benefit local food banks also is planned. Western Maine Community Action activities including work with their community services and moving of inventory for Operation Santa Claus are planned.

“Many of out students are coming to UMF looking to continue with the spirit of volunteerism they began in high school,” said UMF Associate Director of Student Development Kirsten Swan.
