AUGUSTA – Old Fort Western, the 1754 National Landmark historic site on the riverfront in downtown Augusta, will conduct special demonstration events on Sunday afternoons through Oct. 6.

Each of the events will focus on a particular historical activity or museum process.

The schedule is as follows:

Sept. 16: “Sifting through the Evidence.” Patti Violette and Rae Murphy will demonstrate screening for small collections finds from the fort’s north attic.

Sept. 23: “The Arnold Expedition.” Fort staff will recall Benedict Arnold’s March to Quebec with a focus on the 10 days Arnold’s forces camped in and around Fort Western.

Sept. 30: “To Make the Dough Rise.” The fort’s Andrea Ostrofsky will demonstrate and explain the workings of the leavening agents available to 18th- and 19th-century bakers.

Oct. 6: “Fall Festival.” Cider pressing and seasonal household chores will round out the fort’s 2007 season.

The fort is open from 1 to 4 p.m. weekends only through Columbus Day. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children between the ages of 6 and 16; free, kids under 6. Prescheduled school and other group programs are available. Phone 626-2385 or go to www.oldfortwestern.org to learn more.
