Are our children safe? Every year in mid-August, drivers are reminded, with the start of school, we need to be aware of the safety of children waiting for, riding on, and boarding and disembarking school buses.

But what about our Lewiston school bus drivers?

Recently, as I was on my way home from my job at Edward Little High School, I stopped at the intersection of Golder and Pond roads in Lewiston. A school bus passed from Golder onto Pond, obviously exceeding the 25 miles per hour speed limit. As I continued on my way home up Pond Road, the bus pulled far ahead of me and continued to speed up dramatically after the speed limit increased to 35 mph. I called the school department and left a voice-mail message with the person in charge of bus transportation, expressing my concern.

I was troubled to learn on the television news the next day that three Lewiston school buses had been clocked exceeding, by double, the posted speed limit through school zones on the same day I registered my concerns.

While I am relieved to learn Hudson Bus Lines has sent a letter of warning to all bus drivers, and will be offering a special training session in October, that seems way too late.

For the safety of our children, the bus line needs to be more proactive in the future.
