AUBURN – The sinkhole was repaired and water was flowing to homes on Shepley Street on Wednesday after a water main break disrupted the neighborhood a day before.
Water district officials said crews will remain on the scene to clean up the site and contractors will continue with a drainage project.
On Tuesday, a water main burst in two places under the street, causing a large hole to appear in the roadway above it. One driver struck the hole, another veered around it and repair crews got to work soon after.
The main was fixed by late Tuesday night. The only problems Wednesday came in the form of debris caused when a sewer pipe ruptured and took down parts of the road with it.
“That’s what created the cavern that people saw,” engineer John Storer said. “Everything is functioning now. It’s just a matter of gravel, dirt and rocks left behind.”
Storer said the cleanup was expected to be finished by the end of Wednesday.
It was believed the main break Tuesday was caused by recent blasting in the area during the ongoing drainage work in the neighborhood.
