DIXFIELD – Selectmen are considering moving the polling station from the fire station kitchen to a place that meets handicap-accessibility laws.
Town Manager Tom Richmond said the state cited the town last fall for its inadequate polling place. There was no fine attached, he said.
He and selectmen are working with SAD 21 Superintendent Tom Ward to move the polls to T.W. Kelly Dirigo Middle School prior to the November 2008 presidential election. The move may come as soon as June, Richmond said.
In the meantime, modifications to the fire station voting entrance will be made to ensure that all voters can use the polls in the November 2007 elections. He said the violations of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act include an exterior door that doesn’t open properly and inadequate telephone lines.
In other matters, in an effort to reduce public works spending, selectmen agreed this week to end responsibility for maintaining the public ice skating rink at McGouldrick Park.
Instead, officials are looking for volunteers to help in its operation. Anyone interested may contact the town office.
Suggestions were also made to include funds for the rink’s operation in the recreation department budget during next year’s annual town meeting.
Richmond was named as delegate to the autumn Maine Municipal Association Convention.
Also, action on a new all-terrain-vehicle policy was delayed until the selectmen’s Sept. 24 meeting.
