POLAND – A woman reported missing after rowing out onto Tripp Lake in a canoe on Friday was later found safe near a vacant camp.
A team from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office and Poland Fire Department searched the lake by boat Friday afternoon after it was reported that a woman was missing.
She had stayed at the Wolf Cove Inn on Tripp Lake on Thursday night, police said, and was last seen Friday morning at breakfast.
Believing she had gone onto Tripp Lake in a canoe, police and fire crews began to search the lake from a rescue boat. At about 5 p.m. they spotted the woman hailing them from the shore on the north end of the lake.
“She seemed happy to see us,” said Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Sgt. William Gagne.
Police said the woman had encountered high winds after rowing out onto the lake Friday morning. After rowing to safety, she tried unsuccessfully to hail at least one other boater.
The woman’s name was not available Friday night.
