AUBURN – Play until you see chalk dust and hear a whistle.

Ben Hartnett reinforced that time-honored lesson at Lewiston High School’s expense Saturday afternoon.

The Edward Little senior tiptoed the sideline in front of his bench, zigzagged through two defenders and fired home the game-winner with 2:21 remaining in the second overtime to give undefeated EL a 1-0 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference boys’ soccer triumph.

“I hustled to keep it in, and I don’t know how I got through,” Hartnett said. “Just put my head down and go.”

Hartnett’s heady maneuver and Lewiston’s momentary hesitation in waiting for side judge Ron Giasson to wave the out-of-bounds flag was the difference in game dominated off-and-on by the Blue Devils.

Lewiston (2-3-1) rifled four shots on goal in the first five-minute overtime period before being victimized by Hartnett’s third point-blank scoring opportunity of the second extra session.

“Of course I thought he was out. I tell you what, my kid doesn’t stop playing unless it’s out. But then again, you don’t stop playing until the whistle blows,” said Lewiston coach Mike McGraw.

“I’m not going to fault that kid, because he played his butt off the whole game.”

It was the Blue Devils’ third one-goal game in four days and second straight loss.

EL (4-0-1) also showcases a few jagged fingernails two rough but rewarding weeks into the campaign.

Already missing three players to injury and another due to transfer, the Red Eddies were without Shea Flynn, who was out of state at a skiing competition.

Eric Prue entered the game in the second half, playing for the first time since the opening weekend, and helped stem the tide of Lewiston scoring bids while giving EL its first semblance of an attack.

Freshman Tim Mains enjoyed the plum chance in regulation, ringing the crossbar in the ninth minute of the second half.

“It’s a good start. I wouldn’t say we’re in the class of some of the other teams in the conference, but we’re doing it,” said Edward Little coach Dave Morin. “I’m just happy with the intensity in the second half, and we played a little smarter. And Ben’s just been willing himself on people.”

Hartnett also scored the game-winner against Leavitt on Thursday.

Earlier in the second OT, he turned, fired from inside 10 feet and narrowly missed the cage to the right. A minute later, Hartnett nearly delivered a highlight film one-timer off a pretty centering pass from Mains.

“I probably should have finished that one. I had a couple I should have finished, but it all came down to the team,” Hartnett said. “You can’t ask for much more.”

Josh Mains made 16 saves for the Red Eddies. Alex Wong snuffed out eight in the Lewiston net.

“We had some chances. They knocked it off the crossbar,” said McGraw, whose Devils outshot the Eddies, 27-12. “It’s one of those things where if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.”
