LEWISTON – One game – and one roster-depleted win – into the season, the Lewiston Maineiacs are short yet another player today.

Towering German defenseman Denis Reul left this week to attend the Boston Bruins’ training camp, leaving the Maineiacs to play with just five defensemen and 12 forwards in today’s second contest of the season, against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

“We’re going to go with five defensemen,” Maineiacs’ head coach Ed Harding said. “We were working on trying to bring up one of our junior-affiliated players, but they had games this weekend, too, and that didn’t work.”

Also still missing are Kevin Marshall (Philadelphia Flyers’ camp), Jonathan Bernier (L.A. Kings camp) and David Perron (St. Louis Blues camp), as well as Stefan Chaput, who is still recovering from an undisclosed injury.

To help the players rest a bit, Harding had lighter workouts Friday and Saturday, though he worked them a bit harder Saturday.

“We were satisfied with the win (Thursday), and we were satisfied that the young kids got some good playing experience,” Harding said, “but we were far from perfect … We’re always working on in-zone coverage and assignments, sorting those things out.”

One of the biggest concerns for Harding and his staff already is the power play. Despite eight chances with an extra skater, the Maineiacs scored just once.

“The power play is something I certainly concerned with, and I probably will be concerned with it all season,” Harding said. “That my be the one spot where we aren’t quite experienced.”

The Maineiacs square off this afternoon with a Titan squad that worked overtime to defeat Moncton in its opener Friday night, 6-5. The biggest threat the Titan pose is their forward corps.

“They have a good group of forwards,” Harding said. “We have to be careful of them. On defense, they have two defenders missing as well, so they’re in a similar situation as us.”

Danny Masse, who has always performed well against Lewiston, had three assists in Acadie-Bathurst’s win over Moncton, while Eric Faille, Charles-Antoine Messier and Jordan Clendenning had two points each.

Seventeen-year-old Antoine Tardif earned the win in that game, though he allowed five goals on just 25 shots. Lewiston, meanwhile, saw Peter Delmas make 23 saves on 24 shots in its opening-night win.

“Peter had five or six really key saves,” Harding said. “He played very well.”

Harding said Delmas will again get the start this afternoon.

Faceoff today at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee is at 4 p.m.
