• With impressive exercises the corner stone of the new Elks Club House at the corner of Ash and Middle streets, Lewiston, was formerly laid in the presence of a large number of people yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

• Marblehead expects to have in a few weeks the largest flower garden in New England. The “Rawson Dahlia Farm,” as it is generally known, comprises ten acres, and a small army of workmen are now engaged in laying out the beds. At the present moment 20,000 Japanese iris are being set out in the one section of the mammoth garden, and thousands of dahlias are in bloom.

50 years ago, 1957

• It’s a long, tiring walk from the first floor of the Lewiston city building to the clock up in the tower. And it means lifting weary feet, first one and then the other, up an even 150 steps.

AUGUSTA – A strange kind of drought which has permitted good crops but reduced water in storage to near-record lows has Maine forestry and industrial officials concerned. A Forestry Dept. spokesman said today Maine has had “just enough rain to keep us out of trouble,” and an Agriculture Dept. official agreed that surface moisture generally has been adequate for crops and orchards. But beneath the top few inches the ground is very dry, particularly in extreme southwestern Maine, they said.

• Three years is a long time to be gone in the trendy world of pop music, where many bands remain popular for as long as their latest hit stays on the charts. But lead singer Steven Tyler insists that Aerosmith has only begun to rock. Aerosmith’s popularity surged in the mid-1970s due to such hits as “Dream On” and “Walk this Way.”

• The Dow Jones industrial average climbed to a new 13-month high Wednesday as the stock market recorded its third consecutive gain. Dow Jones’ average of 30 blue chips rose 7.45 to 930.46, its highest close since it stood at 936.93 on Aug. 14, 1981.
