BRIDGTON – The Lakes Environmental Association has scheduled two educational walks that will look at the natural history in town.

According to Colin Holme, field service director at the organization, the walks are an extension of a series related to “Reading the Forested Landscape,” a book by Tom Wessels. In the book, Wessels looks at clues at various sites in New England to determine the history of the land in terms of both man-made and natural events.

Both walks will be led by Bridie McGreavy, the organization’s watershed education director, and last about two hours.

McGreavy recommends that participants on the walks read Wessels’ book for a greater understanding of the subject, although it is not required.

The first walk takes place along the Stevens Brook trail, which runs through natural areas of downtown Bridgton. Holme said the walk will visit old foundations and other man-made sites, but will focus mostly on the aspects of natural history.

The Stevens Brook walk begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Lakes Environmental Association’s office at 230 Main St.

The second walk takes place at Pondicherry Park, which Holme said is a new area of protected land established by the Lakes Environmental Association and the Loon Echo Land Trust. This walk begins at 10 a.m. Oct. 3.
