LEWISTON – At least two people died late Monday night after a car slid off the pavement and struck a tree on Ferry Road.
Police confirmed that two victims had been found at the scene of the 10:30 p.m. wreck near Grand Avenue. Officers were examining the scene around the crash site to rule out the possibility of other victims.
An hour after the crash, police were still trying to determine the identities of the victims. They were speaking with possible witnesses on Grand Avenue and preparing to reconstruct the crash scene.
Police said the crash involved a single two-door car that they believed had been traveling along Ferry Road. It was unclear what direction the car had been heading when it crashed.
Police closed off a long section of the road, beginning at Apple Road on the Lisbon Street side of Ferry Road. It was expected the road would remain closed into this morning as the reconstruction was completed and the investigation continued.
No further information about the victims or the cause of the crash was available at midnight.
