LEWISTON – If Peter Geiger runs into nasty weather on the way to Rockefeller Center, he’ll have no one to blame but himself.

The editor of the Lewiston-based Farmers’ Almanac, widely regarded as the bible of weather forecasting, is on his way to New York City this week to make an appearance on the Today Show.

“I’ve already checked,” Geiger said Monday. “It’s going to be a perfect week.”

The purpose of the “Today” show appearance isn’t to discuss good weather, however. Geiger will be there to talk about the foul stuff. In particular, he will be promoting his publication’s Worst Wedding Weather Contest, inviting soggy married couples to recall their wedding day encounters with the elements.

“We’ve always been a bride’s best friend, offering weather predictions up to a year in advance,” Geiger said. “However, as we all know, weather is not an exact science and sometimes Mother Nature decides to send her best wishes in not-so-nice ways.”

But don’t take Geiger’s word for it. Appearing during the 10 a.m. hour of the morning show with him on Wednesday will be Maine couple Scott and Tamara Gleeson.

Married in the spring of 2004, the Gleesons’ seaside wedding was dampened by downpours, a story that was featured in the 2008 edition of the Farmers’ Almanac. The bride and her bridesmaids got soaked when the rains came all at once. Blue shoes leaked blue dye onto their feet and ankles. The entire wedding party huddled under a tent, and a sprinkler went off.

In other words, the jackpot.

“It’s a disaster at the time,” Geiger said. “But you remember it forever and it makes for some great stories.”

Perhaps the Gleesons should have invited Geiger to the ceremony from the start. Until a recent wet wedding in Wayne, his record for good weather was almost flawless.

“I’d really never been to a wedding where it rained,” he said. “It was always sunny.”

Geiger said he was not nervous at all about appearing on national television Wednesday morning. He’s been there before, after all, and he’s a veteran of the big programs, such as ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“It’s live and in the flesh,” he said. “It’s really kind of fun.”

Perhaps more so for the couple who will be richly rewarded for having the most god-awful wedding story. They will be sent on a second honeymoon aboard a Windjammer Barefoot Cruise ship. Vow renewals are included.
