FREEPORT – Author Susan Bartlett and illustrator Luanne Wren will read and sign their new children’s picture book, “Opening Day,” at the L.L. Bean store Saturday, Sept. 29.

“Opening Day” not only depicts hunting in an accurate, positive, community and family light, it also explores the friendship of two boys. The boys have taken hunter safety classes together, done target practice and planned their first hunting trip for opening day.

Each shows specific skills in the forest: one for tracking deer, the other for knowing birds by name and habitat. But one is not so sure he can shoot a deer and worries his choice might jeopardize the friendship.

All turns out well in this sensitive story that places friendship and generosity above all.

Bartlett is from Vermont; Wrenn lives in Wilton, where her neighbors and friends posed for the book’s illustrations.

The book event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bean’s Hunting Expo.
