Kevin Marshall and Denis Reul are back.
Stefano Giliati is gone.
The Lewiston Maineiacs’ see-saw roster wobbled again this week as the team heads out for a three-game road swing through Atlantic Canada.
“I’d be nice to get all of our guys back and see what the team looks like then,” Maineiacs’ head coach Ed Harding said. “But, I’m extremely pleased that our young guys and our new guys are getting thrown into the fire, and I think they’re responding well.”
Marshall and Reul will help shore up a wiped-out defensive unit that on Sunday tired quickly in the third with only five players. Marshall is returning from a solid debut at the Philadelphia Flyers’ training camp, and Reul is back after a few days with the Boston Bruins.
“I’ve seen a lot of improvement in Eric Gelinas and Nicolas Therrien already,” Harding said of his two youngest defensemen. “It’s a long season, and you never know when you’re going to need them. They’re the future of the team, as well.”
In the here and now, though, Harding’s top three offensive weapons are all on the shelf. David Perron is skating with the St. Louis Blues, Stefan Chaput continues to recover from an injury and Giliati has gone to Albany for the River Rats’ training camp.
The Maineiacs’ first test on this three-games-in-six-nights trek is in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, against a nearly complete Rocket team which figures to be among the top squads in the Eastern Conference this season.
“They have a lot of the same guys back, so they have a lot more experience,” Harding said. “They have two very, very potent lines. The Morrison kid (forward Brett Morrison) is a great hockey player, and Chris Doyle is a young kid I like, he’s a hard-nosed kid. They’re good in net with (Antoine) Lafleur, and they have en experienced group of ‘d,’ so we’ll have our hands full.”
The Rocket have lost both games to date this season, including a 6-3 setback to Saint John on Sunday in which the Sea Dogs chased Lafleur from the net.
Lewiston also lost Sunday, 5-3, to Acadie-Bathurst after blowing a 3-1 lead in the second period.
“I really feel like we gave one away,” Harding said. “We played so well in the first, and we really played well early on in the second, and in a three-minute span in the second we didn’t do a very good job.”
After PEI, the Maineiacs will visit Bathurst. The Titan, who were missing four key players in Lewiston on Sunday, are expected to be near full strength, including the return of one of the best players in the league in Mathieu Perreault.
The road trip ends in Saint John, where the Sea Dogs will also boast a new player in Alexandre Picard-Hooper, for whom they traded over the weekend.
After an appearance at their fundraising golf tournament Monday, the team will again hit the road for a pair of games in Halifax next weekend.
