HARTFORD – Robert N. Leavitt, 51, a resident of Plains Road in Turner, died Monday, Sept. 17, due to injuries sustained in a tractor accident on Route 219 in Hartford.
He was born on Dec. 3, 1955, in Farmington, the son of Norman and Leona (Seamon) Leavitt and attended Mt. Blue High School. He married Susie Perreault in 1972, and had two daughters, Amy and Erika, they later divorced.
Growing up, he worked for Bailey’s Dairy Farm in Farmington. After high school, he worked as a manager at McDonald’s in Farmington. He also worked for a few years logging with his brother-in-law, Mike.
In 1981, he started working for Warren and Marguerite Varney’s dairy farm in Turner. Farming was the love of his life. On Aug. 14, 1982, he married Beverly Rose in Greene, and they moved onto Tige and Vera Timberlake’s dairy farm later that year.
For 25 years, they have worked together to establish their dairy farm. In 2004, a fire destroyed their home and they lost half of their dairy herd. They replaced their home and a year later rebuilt the milking facility and started shipping milk again.
He loved fishing trips in the spring, hunting camp in the fall and snowmobile camp in the winter with his family. Family was everything to him. He was happy when he was working the fields, tinkering on his equipment and spending time with his “girls,” the cows.
He is best known for his gift of gab. No matter how busy he was, he always had time to stop and talk. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Town Comprehensive Planning Committee, president of Androscoggin Farm Bureau, and was involved in Androscoggin Soil & Water.
