FARMINGTON – Often called “the heart and soul of American roots music,” Jay Unger and Molly Mason won international acclaim after Ken Burns’ “The Civil War” hit the airwaves. Their performance of Jay’s haunting composition “Ashokan Farewell” captured much attention. The soundtrack won a Grammy and “Ashokan Farewell” was nominated for an Emmy.

The duo will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in Nordica Auditorium on the University of Maine at Farmington campus, courtesy of The Arts Institute of Western Maine.

Unger and Mason have garnered legions of fans through their appearances on “Great Performances, A Prairie Home Companion,” their own public radio specials and work on other film soundtracks such as “Brother’s Keeper,” “Legends of the Fall” and a host of Ken Burns’ documentaries.

They are known for their timeless renditions of hard-driving Appalachian melodies, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes, Civil War classics, swing and country, and original works – interspersed with wit and warmth.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for children under age 16. They may be purchased at Mickey’s Hallmark and at the door.
