Farmington Emblem makes several donations

FARMINGTON – Farmington Emblem Club held its first meeting since June on Sept. 5. Due to the death of the first vice president, Sandy Knight, members voted to move the second vice president Sylvia Richards to first vice president and Rebecca Powell will take over as the club’s second vice president for the rest of the 2007-2008 club year.

There were 28 members present and 60 absent, for a new total of 88 members.

At the request of Americanism Chairwoman Kamilla Hall, the club voted to do a spaghetti supper at Mt. Blue High School on Monday, Oct. 8, for a group of about 75 people from the Air Force Band. The club will also present a flag-folding ceremony that evening. Another flag-folding ceremony will be performed at noon at the opening ceremonies of the Farmington Fair.

Lois Baker, in charge of community service, reminded members to bring in their Hood milk bottle caps, and Campbell Soup labels for area schools.

Literacy Chairwoman Diana Oliver said she has made 1,326 bookmarks so far this year. They will be donated to area libraries.

Shannon Smith reported on the plans made for the National Emblem Convention to be held in San Francisco. She reported that the club-sponsored youth cheerleaders would start they cheering season this month.

The next Maine Emblem Club meeting will be held at the Farmington Elks Lodge on Sunday, Sept. 30. All club members are invited.

Jean Corcoran and Sharon Jacques will chair the club-sponsored craft fairs this fall. One will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, and the second on Saturday, Dec. 1.

Donations will be made toward funeral expenses of the club’s Adopt a Veteran, a woman who died recently, to the Otis Federal Credit Union to help the annual basket beano, to the Farmington Elks for the annual golf tournament, and to “Project Linus,” women who make blankets for children.

This month’s mystery gift was won by Claudette Merchant and the 50-50 raffle by Nancy Crosby.
