LEWISTON – L/A Arts’ Gallery 5 is presenting a unique exhibit this fall. Titled “The Creative Economy,” it is an invitational exhibition of 10 local businesses demonstrating the talent and technology that will guide the community’s future development.

The art show opens to the public Wednesday, Sept. 26, and will run through Saturday, Oct. 27.

“Maine has an unbelievably large community of artists, both visual and performing artists, and most of them work ‘day jobs’ in local businesses,” said Tammie Grieshaber, curator of Gallery 5.

“These artists are the creative force in so many of our businesses. That creative force is more than their demonstrated artistic talent as a musician, actor, photographer, painter or sculptor. That creative force is most powerful in their problem-solving, innovation, and strategic-planning skills,” she affirmed.

“I was so impressed with the concept of a creative economy that was presented at the Blaine House Conference in 2004. Immediately, I could see the connections to some of our local businesses and our growing arts community,” Grieshaber said. “My gut feeling was that Lewiston-Auburn was at the tipping point of a vibrant and exciting growth potential, and this exhibit is our attempt to help the community understand this wonderful potential.”

“The Creative Economy” exhibit highlights these businesses: Auburn Manufacturing, Encompass Marketing & Design, Harriman Associates, Katahdin Music Works, Marquis Signs, McIntosh & Tuttle Cabinetmakers, Pantheon Bourgeois Guitars, Rinck Advertising, Sebago Technics Inc. and Downeast Barn (Timber Frames).

L/A Arts Gallery 5 will continue to hold informal Artist Talks during this exhibit. The first will feature Eric Agren of Fuel bistro and wine bar, who will discuss “A Vision for Our Downtowns,” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11.

Stepping out of the typical Thursday night slot, Todd McIntosh of McIntosh and Tuttle Cabinetmakers will talk about “Creativity in The Work Place” Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Advanced reservations are required for Artist Talks through L/A Arts, 782-7228, with a $5 donation.

Gallery 5 is in Lyceum Hall at 49 Lisbon St. It is open to the public from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday; from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday; from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and by appointment, 576-4805, or [email protected].
