CONWAY, N.H. (AP) – A 65-year-old Massachusetts man safely made it off Mount Washington after he borrowed a flashlight from two hikers so he could see the trail.
Conservation Officer Mark Ober said Richard Mosley of Halifax had not hiked his planned route up the Ammonoosuc ravine and back down the Jewel trail in 15 years and underestimated how long it would take him. When he wasn’t back by 9 p.m. Friday, his wife called authorities.
Ober and another officer went looking for him – each hiking up a different trail in Mosley’s planned loop.
But before they could find him, Mosley had borrowed the flashlight and found his way off the mountain.
Mosley’s wife alerted authorities who radioed the two rescuers.
Ober said if Mosley had not borrowed the flashlight, the night could have been much longer for everyone.
Mosley made it out of the woods at about 10:45 p.m. The two officers hiked an hour and a half back after learning he was safe.
