LEWISTON – Narvie Louise Stevens, 72, of New Gloucester died Sept. 18.
She was born on March 18, 1935, the daughter of Milburn and Dorothy (Strout) Stevens.
She graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1953, and went on to Gorham State Teachers College, graduating in 1957. She earned her master’s degree at the University of Maine in Orono.
She worked many summers as a waitress and helped care for her four brothers during the long illness of her father.
She taught kindergarten for 37 years, 10 years in Auburn and 27 in Glastonbury, Conn. She moved back to the family home in New Gloucester upon her retirement.
Narvie was a lifetime member of the National Teachers Association and a member of the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester. She also enjoyed travel and theater. She was an avid reader and loved dining out with her friends and family.
Four wonderful and loving brothers survive her, Vincent and Beverly of West Paris, David and Cindy of New Gloucester, Benjamin and Marilyn of Lewiston, and Jonathan and Linda of Rangeley; one nephew, Zachary Stevens of Shrewsbury, Mass.; five nieces, Tracy Tyree of Rustburg, Va., Inge Stevens of Northport, Tara Harter of Tampa, Fla., Terri Hawkes of Franklin Park, N.J., and Tina Goodwin of New Gloucester.
She also had 12 grand-nieces and -nephews in whom she found great delight and joy, Hannah, Logan and Landon Tyree of Virginia, Lily Stevens-Damon and Lucas Damon of Maine, David and Donovan Goodwin of Maine, Brandon Ufert of Illinois, Gavin Hawkes of N.J., and Samuel, Solomon and Sadie Harter of Florida; many aunts and cousins; “The Girls,” friends from elementary school and college who were like her sisters; and her beloved Rag doll cat, Isabelle.
She was predeceased by two nephews, Mike Ufert and Jonathan Stevens.
