Day to remember

AUGUSTA – The Maine Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims for parents of murdered children will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the State Capitol Building Hall of Flags.

Gov. John E. Baldacci will be in attendance with Attorney General Steve Rowe, the Maine State Police, the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence and the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

College open house

GORHAM – Prospective college students and their families are invited to attend a University of Southern Maine open house being held by the USM Office of Undergraduate Admission from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Costello Sports Complex on the Gorham campus.

Teachers’ conclave

PORTLAND – The Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance will host a daylong conference for writing teachers on Monday, Oct. 29, at the University of Southern Maine.

Presenters will include Kate Kennedy, Christian Barter, Lewis Robinson and Elise Juska. Topics will include poetry in the classroom, teachers as writers, workshop techniques and using reading to teach writing. The conference is geared toward high school teachers, but there is benefit for all levels of instructor.

Conference fees are $55 for MWPA members and $75 for nonmembers. CEU credit is available, and registration will be accepted up until the conference date. Registration materials are available at www.mainewriters.org.

Photo workshop

AUGUSTA – A nature photography workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Pine Tree State Arboretum.
