LEWISTON – Fernand J. Landry, 93, of 162 Webber Ave., died early Monday, Sept. 24, at Russell Park Health Care Facility with family at his side.
He was born in Lewiston April 10, 1914, a son of Louis and Alice (Picard) Landry. He was educated in local schools and remained a lifelong resident of this community.
After school, Fern enlisted for a couple of years in the CCC as a camp cook in Patten. On May 22, 1937, he married the former Lina E. Levesque, who passed away March 30, 1987.
He first worked a few years at Bates Manufacturing. In 1945, he opened his own shoe repair shop, known as Fern’s Shoe Repair, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1976. For many years, he was known as the “bubble gum man” to local kids, because he always had bubble gum to give kids at the shop.
He was a member of Holy Cross Church. He lived for his family and grandchildren. His hobby was making furniture and his other pastimes were fishing, spending time at the beach and going for rides through back country roads.
He leaves a son, Joseph (Raymond) Landry and wife, Lewella, of Saco; a daughter, Muriel Forgues and husband, Bertrand, of Lewiston; eight grandchildren, Mark Landry and wife, Jane, of Fairfield, Conn., Paul Landry and wife, Kate, of Wales, John Landry and wife, Pat, of Auburn, Raymond Landry and wife, Annette, of Austin, Texas, Thomas Landry and wife, Michelle, of Readfield, Tony Landry and partner, Rich Stone, of Lewiston, Michelle Forgues of Auburn and Stephen Forgues and wife, Kerri, of Lewiston; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Cecile Ward of Lewiston, Celine McKeone and husband, Robert, of Litchfield and Lorraine Lacasse and husband, Maurice, of Lewiston; and his sister-in-law and devoted care giver, Blanche Landry of Auburn.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Roger, Laurier and Bertrand; a sister, Carmen Ouellette; and a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Landry.
