CANTON – The Androscoggin Land Trust and the town of Canton will recognize National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 29, by teaming up to develop a recreational trail along Whitney Brook, a tributary to the Androscoggin River. Volunteers are being sought to help remove brush and debris.
The town of Canton is preparing land acquired through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant for development of multi-use trails and other public recreational opportunities.
The Whitney Brook trail will be the first section to be established.
“While the trail building is not being done on land held by ALT, the land trust is committed to long-term partnerships with communities that integrate recreation on our lands with those held by other willing landowners,” said Jonathan LaBonte, land trust president.
The trust conserves more than 975 acres in Canton, including land managed for sustainable forestry and more than five miles of Androscoggin River frontage. Canton is part of a larger planning region for the trust, that region including the towns of Jay, Livermore Falls and Livermore.
Volunteers should meet at the Canton Municipal Building on Route 140 at 9 and bring gloves and brush clippers, if possible.
