Board: New Gloucester selectmen

Met: Monday, Sept. 24

Post vacant

The scoop: Three board members say they are not interested in being vice chairman. The office has been vacant since A. Wayne Cobb died last month.

Town Manager Rosemary Kulow said the board doesn’t have to have a vice chairman.

Up next: An election to fill Cobb’s post is scheduled Nov. 6. Nomination papers are due Oct. 4 with signatures of 25 registered voters.

Unpaid taxes

Issue: The town is managing a collection process for delinquent personal property taxes with one of its attorneys from Bernstein Shur of Portland who is a tax specialist.

Scoop: Three delinquent tax accounts that total roughly $75,000 have been turned over to the court system for collection. They are: Searles Excavating $4,526; Daryl D. Gushee Inc. $56,655, and McAtee Excavating $12,652.

Snow Hill Road

Issue: Resident Ellen Field says tractor-trailers that cut through onto Snow Hill Road from Route 26 will ruin the reconstructed and newly paved road.

Up next: Selectmen unanimously refused to limit the road weight because the road serves as a collector for commerce.

Town forest

Issue: Trash and damage in the town forest off Route 122.

Scoop: Selectman Steve Libby said he walked the property lines in August and found target shooting has left destroyed targets, shell casings and trash. And ATVs have caused damage with all the trails except two. He said better access is needed and better protection of the town’s property.

Up next: Kulow will contact abutters for better access and possible land swaps. More information is being sought from registered deeds to assure the transfer was complete when the property was purchased from the Maine Turnpike Authority.
