Silver Tea
AUGUSTA – The Maine Leadership Awards for Breast Health will be presented at the 10th annual Silver Tea hosted by First Lady Karen Baldacci at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Blaine House as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Awards will be presented to one woman who has made extraordinary contributions as a volunteer, and two individuals with exceptional records as health care professionals. Recipients are Cathy McDonald, RN, of Portland; Elaine Chambers, RN, MS, of Hamden; and William Horner, MD, of Bangor.
School fair
FREEPORT – An independent school fair will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at Merriconeag Waldorf School’s Community Hall, 57 Desert Road. Call 865-3900 for more information. Representatives from more than 25 day and boarding schools throughout New England will be present.
Teaching award
ELLSWORTH – Students, parents, faculty and administration of SAD 52 are invited to nominate an outstanding full-time teacher for the Patience W. Norman Prize for Teacher Excellence. The prize carries a $5,000 award.
Patience Norman was a history teacher with an inquisitive mind who believed her students were capable of academic excellence. Norman required her students to work hard and challenged them to surpass her and their own expectations.
The Norman Prize has been established at the Maine Community Foundation to recognize teachers in SAD 52 who emulate her education philosophy.
Teachers who stimulate intellectual curiosity, raise aspirations and demand critical thinking in their classrooms are eligible. Deadline for nominations is Nov. 9. Guidelines and a nomination form are available at www.mainecf.org or by calling toll-free 1-877-700-6800.
Literary awards
BATH – Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance is accepting nominations for its 2008 Maine Literary Awards.
Awards will be given in published book categories, as well as in unpublished manuscript categories. There are also awards available for young writers.
Nomination materials are available at www.mainewriters.org, and the deadline is Dec. 31. Winners will receive a prize and be honored at a ceremony in April.
