LEWISTON – Dirt kicked up by bullets that police said were fired by two teens Tuesday night hit a man sleeping in a field nearby, according to the investigator in the case.

Jeffrey McDaniel, 43, told police he was sleeping in a field near Lincoln and Cedar streets when he was startled by the sound of gunshots that came so close they kicked up dirt in his face and body.

The experience scared McDaniel so much he didn’t know whether he should stay still or tuck and roll, police officer Justin Kittredge wrote in an affidavit. McDaniel was later taken to Central Maine Medical Center with complaints of chest pain.

Daniel Chamberland and Samuel Warner, both 18 and living locally, were arrested and charged with reckless conduct, a class C felony, after the shootings. Chamberland was released from the Androscoggin County Jail on $540 cash bail Thursday; Warner remained there Thursday night on $40 cash bail, a corrections officer said.

Kittredge said Chamberland told police he and Warner had been shooting into the air a Mossberg .22-caliber rifle he bought at Wal-Mart the day before. He shot about eight rounds, and Warner shot the remainder, Chamberland said.

Chamberland drank two mixed drinks of Pepsi and Southern Comfort before the shootings, he told police. He wasn’t drunk, but was “high” from a marijuana cigarette he smoked earlier, according to the affidavit.

Police searched him and found in his pocket a bag of marijuana weighing just over a gram.

About 80 yards from where police found Chamberland and Warner, a van was parked on Lincoln Street, riddled with bullet holes. It belongs to Hope Haven Gospel Mission. One of the rounds recovered by police was found in a seat.

Police responded to the area about 9:30 p.m. after hearing gunshots coming from a densely wooded area at Lincoln and Cedar streets. Firearms are restricted in the area. Police approached the area slowly, hearing more than two dozen gunshots. Warner fled when a police cruiser pulled up to the intersection. After a foot chase, he told police he was alone and hadn’t fired any shots. Police found a backpack in thick vegetation nearby along with Chamberland, who was lying face down with a rifle under his left hand.
