Common Ties promotes positive health outcomes

LEWISTON – Common Ties Mental Health and its 100 Pine Street Wellness and Recovery Center are raising awareness on positive health outcomes. The center is providing education on improving health through improved diet, exercise, life style choices and learning how to manage stress.

The most recent effort, done with the help and support of Lots to Gardens, is an inner city, raised-bed “Victory Garden,” seeking victory over chronic disease through healthier eating, exercise and an improved ability to make the positive choices that lead to victory over poor health outcomes.

People challenged by a mental illness die as much as 20 years sooner than the general population due to preventable conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

The programming offered at the Wellness and Recovery Center is geared toward changing the behaviors that contribute to the poor health outcomes and have fun doing it.

The center has a member prepared a meal every Tuesday, using radishes, cucumbers and zucchini from the garden.

The center provides a place to gather and to provide mutual support for those coping with the effects of mental illness.

For more information on the center, call Jean Nielsen at 795-6040 or e-mail [email protected].
