Dear Sun Spots: This is in response to No Name, No Town who requested information on grocery stores that deliver (Sun Spots column Saturday): There are a handful of grocery stores in the Lewiston/Auburn area that deliver. There is also a program available to senior citizens and people coping with disabilities who are homebound. It is called Getting Around Town and is a service offered by Seniors-Plus, the Area Agency on Aging serving Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties.
For the cost of groceries, and a small fee based on one’s income, a volunteer will shop for a person’s groceries and deliver them to their door. Getting Around Town volunteers also assist elders who are no longer able to drive. For more information about the costs associated with this program or to become a volunteer, phone SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-1241. – SeniorsPlus, Lewiston.
Dear Sun Spots: The Rebekahs of Maine have put out a new cookbook that may be purchased through any member of a Rebekah lodge in the state.
There have been many requests for the Maine Rebekah cookbooks that are now out of print. This cookbook is unique. The committee has gleaned recipes from the old cookbooks to compile this new cookbook. It is called Maine Rebekahs Cookbook 1894-2006. It is spiral bound, has 283 pages and sells for $15. Many times people have written to you to find out how they can find where to buy a Rebekah cookbook and you have helped them. Anyone interested in this new cookbook may phone Esther Tucker in Poland at 998-5359. I am a member of Liberty Rebekah Lodge No. 94 of Auburn. – Esther Tucker, Poland.
Answer: In addition to the cookbook, perhaps fans of this cookbook might like the following recipe featured online at www.cooks.com:
Maine Rebekahs oatmeal muffins ingredients: 1 cup cooked oatmeal, 1½ cups flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 4 teaspoons baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ cup milk, 1 egg, well-beaten, 2 tablespoons melted butter. Method: Add oatmeal to milk. Sift all dry ingredients together. Add oatmeal mixture, egg and butter and mix well. Pour into muffin tins and bake in 400 degree oven about 20 minutes.
Dear Sun Spots: Several women from the Norway-Oxford area go to Boston each October to a homeless shelter for women, where we teach knitting and bring them dozens and dozens of hats, scarves and mittens we have knit.
This year we find we are in need of knitting needles to take with us. We leave each woman there some yarn, needles and instructions so they can knit for themselves. We need 10-inch needles in sizes 7, 8, 9 and 10. If any of your readers would like to help us, I may be reached at 665-2478. We thank you for all your help, and hope some readers will find some needles for us. – No Name, Bryant Pond.
Dear Sun Spots: This is in response to the reader looking for cardamom (Sun Spots inquiry Tuesday): As an avid cook who loves the spice cardamom, I have another suggestion for cardamom lovers. Check with your local natural food store. Many of them carry bulk spices, often packaged in smaller containers and priced more economically. I would recommend JS check out Fare Share Co-op in Norway, or drive to Rumford to Red Hill Natural Foods. Both are stores where I have purchased spices for many years. – Ken Couch, Mexico.
