LEWISTON – An unexpected decline in blood donations throughout Maine has Red Cross officials concerned about the potential effect on hospital supplies.

“After the challenging summer season, we should be seeing blood donations picking up at this time,” said Ellen Russell, manager of donor recruitment for the American Red Cross Blood Services in Maine.

However, blood drives have not been as successful as expected, she said. “Volunteer donors are needed at this time to avoid a possible shortage.”

The Red Cross must collect 300 units of blood each day to adequately meet the needs of patients in Maine.

This number is based on past blood usage from Maine hospitals as well as projected patient need.
