ANDOVER – An Andover man who cut into his leg with a chain saw Friday morning while clearing brush is recuperating at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

David Anderson of 721 South Arm Road was listed in stable condition Friday night, a nursing supervisor said.

“It was a very serious chain saw injury,” Med-Care Ambulance Director Dean Milligan said late Friday afternoon. “He had some muscle and tendon issues, but we were unsure whether he’d fractured the bone or not. It was a deep cut.”

“It didn’t sever his leg, but maybe it did tendon damage,” Fire Chief Ken Dixon added in a telephone interview Friday afternoon.

When Andover Rescue arrived first, Anderson’s wife was tending to him. The Med-Care crew took over and took him to Rumford Hospital. He was later taken to Lewiston.

The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. when Anderson was trimming brush on his property. Dixon said the saw kicked back and caught Anderson, believed to be in his early 50s, on the lower part of his left leg.

“There was no safety gear worn. He had a burn pile going and was clearing brush,” Milligan said.
