East Monmouth – Thelda E. Howe, 87, a resident of Sanborn Road, East Monmouth, died Thursday, Sept. 27, at her home in East Monmouth.

She was born June 27, 1920, in Lisbon Falls, the daughter of Percy and Florence Strout Wirth. Thelda attended schools in Lisbon and graduated from Lisbon High School.

On Oct. 16, 1970, she and Ellsworth Howe were married. Mr. Howe passed away in 1989. During World War II, she worked in Connecticut on airplanes. Thelda and Ellsworth moved to Monmouth in 1972. She worked as a spinner at Worombo Mill in Lisbon Falls, Tarnsworth Mill in Lisbon Center and Carlton Woolen Mill in Winthrop, retiring in 1999.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and reading, and loved her family very much. She was a member of the Maine Iris Society, a past member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Monmouth Senior Citizens and the East Monmouth Methodist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Chaitanya York of Leeds and Michael York of Litchfield; two grandchildren, Shawn York of Portland and Ian York of Litchfield; and one sister, Elizabeth Williams and her husband, William, of Sun City, Fla.
