WEST PARIS – Beginning Oct. 24, the cost of demolition debris permits for commercial businesses will go from $25 to $50 as selectmen attempt cut expenses at the waste transfer station.

Town Manager John White said hauling and tipping fees for the first eight months of this year were $10,897.

The board decided commercial contractors should pay more for using the station.

It was also decided to limit the number of permits to one a week or four per year because the station has just one Dumpster and limited space.

“This change in our bulky- waste policies will cut down on the number of pulls and the amount we have to pay in tipping fees each month. It also may encourage commercial builders to rent Dumpsters and have them available at the site of their job keeping ours open for local homeowners,” Chairman Dennis Henderson said. “I personally would find it cheaper to do that than pay out up to $200 to use the transfer station, plus paying some of the crew to make several trips during the week to haul waste and dispose of waste.”

Residents with demolition debris are also limited to one load per week or four per year, but the first two loads are free. The rest are $25 per permit.

“This is not something we like doing, but we need to cut expenses as much as we can in regard to solid waste disposal.”
