Boston – Among the numerous acts passed by the last Legislature which go into effect today, is that modifying the present law regarding work on the Lord’s Day. The act provides that except in cases of emergency or except at the request of the employee, it shall not be lawful for any person, or corporation, to require an employee engaged in any commercial occupation, industrial process or in transportation, to do on the Lord’s Day the usual work of his occupation unless the employee is allowed during the six days next ensuing, 24 consecutive hours without labor.

50 years ago, 1957

• The Maine Turnpike Authority said today that the speed limit on its 106-mile toll road between Kittery and Augusta would be increased tomorrow.

The new limits will be 70 miles an hour in daylight, 65 at night. Now the legal limit is 60 day or night.

• One-dollar notes carrying the inscription “In God We Trust” will be issued at most banks starting tomorrow. The Treasury, announcing this today, recalled that Congress in 1955 authorized addition of the wording, which has appeared on coins since 1864.

25 years ago, 1982

• Five people in suburban Chicago died after swallowing capsules of Extra-Strength Tylenol, and cyanide poisoning was known or strongly suspected as the cause, authorities said Thursday. The manufacturer recalled nearly 4.7 million of the capsules and authorities said the case was being investigated as “possible homicide.”

• Synagogues keep alive the ancient tradition as well as religion and for the Jewish Community of Lewiston and Auburn and Temple Shalom Synagogue Center is designed to do just this.

The handsome 14,000 square foot, all-brick Auburn synagogue, which had its open house recently, is a careful balance of old and new and gives an aura of being perched on cliffs overlooking the Little Androscoggin River.
