Dear Sun Spots: A couple of years back, a school was collecting sneakers for a fundraiser. The shoes were to be recycled into athletic flooring. Does anyone know of any collections of sneakers? Thank you. I may be reached at 784-9519. – Sharron R. Auburn.

Answer: As you may have noted in the June 20, 2007, column, Sun Spots is not aware of any in Maine. However, she did locate a program begun by Nike and that might assist you – the Nike Reuse a Shoe program online at www.nike.com.

If you click on the Interactive Map, you will be provided with addresses of several states that do collect old sneakers. Sun Spots notes there is one at George & Phillips, 173 Water St., Exeter, NH 03833, via phone at 603-772-3156.

If this is too far for you to travel, you may send any number of shoes to the Nike Recycling Center, C/O Reuse-A-Shoe, 26755 SW 95th Ave., Wilsonville, OR 97070.

Please note that Nike will not accept shoes delivered with postage due.

UPDATE: Nike has changed the location that accepts used athletic shoes. The following information came from a Nike spokesperson:

Nike collection sites are available at Nike owned Stores. For more information about Nike Reuse-A-Shoe and NikeGO, visit www.nikereuseashoe.com and www.nikego.com. Bring up to 10 pairs of shoes to any Reuse-A-Shoe collection location, which can be found at most U.S. Nike and Converse factory stores as well as some global Nike locations. Please check with the location prior to taking your shoes in.

Also, if there is not a collection partner in your area, you or your organization can send any number of shoes to us at: Nike Recycling Center; ℅ Reuse-A-Shoe; 199 Pearson Parkway; Lebanon, IN 46052.

Nike cannot pay for shipping costs, and to ensure that the shipping and collection of shoes doesn’t negatively offset the environmental benefit of recycling, we encourage you to drop off your shoes at a collection point if possible.

Dear Sun Spots: I love your column!

Several months ago, a reader was looking for a source for round pillow forms. Did anyone ever find one? I also need these and would appreciate a source.

Also, the History Channel aired a program at 5 p.m. Sept. 23 called “History of Planet Earth.” They flashed a couple of numbers at the bottom to order their movie, but it was too fast to write down. Help, anyone?

Answer: Sun Spots believes she saw a copy on the for sale racks at the Lewiston Public Library a few days ago. The paperbacks are 50 cents and you might want to check in and see if it’s still there. Another option is to take one out on loan at your local public library. And lastly, you might also consider eBay or amazon.com.
