Harvest supper

OTISFIELD – The Otisfield Free Baptist Church, Rayville Road, will hold a harvest supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in the church hall. The menu will be corned beef, cabbage, and vegetables. The supper is free as a goodwill gesture from the church to the people of the surrounding communities.

On that same evening at 7 p.m. at the Otisfield Community Center the Otisfield Fire Department will host its annual harvest dance.

Red hatters

PARIS – Rambling Roses Red Hatters meet the last Wednesday of every month. Meetings are hosted by members on a rotating schedule. New members are welcome. For more information, contact Diane Page at 539-9067.

Sunday service

PARIS – Sunday, Oct. 7, is World Communion Sunday, and First Congregational Church, 17 East Main St., South Paris, will focus the service on that topic. The Rev. Don Mayberry’s sermon will be “The Hindrance of Pride,” talking about the role of humility and reflection in entering into communion.

The services are broadcast live in the Oxford Hills on AM 1450 and in the Rumford-Bethel area on AM 780. The church is handicap accessible and everyone is welcome.

Other activities at the church include Wednesday Bible study at 9:30 a.m. and a 3 p.m. Thursday healing-prayer-support group for those struggling with cancer or other health or personal issues. The support group meets in the Haskell House Chapel next to the church. For more information, contact the church office at 743-2437.

Library speakers

WOODSTOCK – The Whitman Memorial Library will feature John Ames and John Davis at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9. They will talk about the book, “Trackside, the History of the Grand Trunk Railroad,” by George Melville.

Ames and Davis collaborated with the author and are knowledgeable about the Grand Trunk Line that went through area towns. The public is invited free and light refreshments will be served.

Health seminar

NORWAY – Western Maine Health/Stephens Memorial Hospital will present the October Best of Health Seminar, “Breast and Bone Health for Women of All Ages,” to be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Harper Confernece Center. Learn about risk factors for developing breast cancer and osteoporosis as well as how to reduce those risks through diet and exercise. To reserve a seat, call 743-1562, ext. 478.

AARP meeting

PARIS – The Oxford Hills Chapter, AARP, will meet Monday, Oct. 8, at the First Congregational Church, East Main Street, Paris.

Lunch will be at noon, and reservations are required by calling Thelma at 743-6124 by noon Friday, Oct. 5.

The menu will be macaroni and cheese with ham on the side. Cost is $6.50. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. followed by a presentation by EMTs from PACE explaining “The Vial of Life” program.

Halloween dance

PARIS – The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club will hold a Halloween dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Oxford Hills Middle School, South Paris, with Chris Pinkham calling mainstream and plus level square dancing. Bernie Porter will cue the round dancing.

Takes first

WEST PARIS – West Paris Grange 298 received first prize at the Oxford County Fair. The Grange meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.

The annual fall fair will be held at West Paris Grange Hall, 4 Church St., from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. There will be food, crafts, veggies and Christmas items.

Baptism Sunday

PARIS – The baptism of Lilly Hakanson will be held Sunday, Oct. 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 34 Buckfield Road, Paris. Sunday school will be held at 9 a.m., and the service will begins at 10:15, followed by coffee, refreshments and fellowship.

Bridge results

NORWAY – The Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met Sept. 28 at the Fare Share Co-op for the weekly game. Coming in first in A were Woody Mercier and Richard Balian; second, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; third, Pete Cummings and Dick Allen; fourth, Marta Clements and Nancy Farmer. Coming first in B were Eleanor Griffin and Jim Dickens.
