Memory walks
LEWISTON – The Alzheimer’s Association 2007 Memory Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, in 14 communities throughout Maine. The annual event raises awareness and funds to support local programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as for their families and caregivers. This year’s statewide fundraising goal is $350,000.
Walks will take place in Augusta/Waterville, Bangor, Bar Harbor, Bath/Brunswick/Topsham, Farmington, Fort Kent, Greater Portland, Kennebunk, Lewiston/Auburn, MidCoast, Oxford Hills, Rumford, Skowhegan and York.
All funds raised will remain in Maine to support the 30,000 individuals, families, and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Pro-life session
PORTLAND – The Maine Right to Life Committee’s annual pro-life convention and networking event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Keeley’s Banquet Center, 178 Warren Ave.
Keynote speaker will be author Susan Conroy, who will share the life-affirming experiences she had while working with Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Bob Emrich of the Jeremiah Project, Ray Richardson from the WLOB Morning News Show, and MRLC President Rita Feeney will offer commentary on how to build a culture of life in the state.

Moody reunion
NOBLEBORO – The 75th Moody reunion will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the North Nobleboro Community Hall at 1 p.m. There will be a potluck luncheon. Harvey Moody will update the genealogical chart and connections to Moodys in Exeter, N.H.

Writing contest
AUGUSTA – Maine high school juniors are invited to submit entries for “A Journey Into Writing,” the Maine Community College System’s statewide writing contest. Entries will be accepted through Dec. 1. The contest will be judged by Maine writers Richard Russo, Linda Greenlaw and Wesley McNair.
Juniors are encouraged to submit an original poem, short story or essay of up to 1,500 words. Three finalists will be chosen by the authors from up to 15 semi-finalists selected by the system and will be honored with the designation of “2008 Governor’s Young Writer of the Year.” In addition, each of the three finalists will receive a $2,500 cash award.
Students must submit their entries electronically to the MCCS Web site. The contest rules and entry forms are available online at www.mccs.me.edu (click on: A Journey Into Writing). The finalists and semi-finalists will be honored at an awards ceremony in May.
Elks scholarships
LEWISTON – The Elks National Foundation’s Most Valuable Student scholarship contest will help 500 high school seniors in 2008. It added more top awards to the program. Applicants will compete for top awards ranging from $8,000 over four years to $60,000 over four years. The remaining 482 runners-up will receive scholarships of $4,000 over four years.
Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks. Males and females compete separately and are judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need.
Applications are available at Elks lodges, local high schools, for download at www.elks.org/enf/scholars, or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Elks National Foundation, 2750 N. Lakeview Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60614-2256.
Completed applications must be turned in to the applicant’s nearest Elks lodge no later than the Jan. 11, 2008.
