CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Sugarloaf USA’s annual homecoming is set for this weekend.

Highlights include the Upcountry Artists annual arts and crafts show Saturday and Sunday, Carrabassett Valley Academy’s used sports equipment sale, the annual homecoming auction and more.

Upcountry’s arts and crafts will feature the work of 60 members offering everything from paintings to wooden furniture, ceramic pottery, Ukrainian eggs and stained glass. The show, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, is held in the base lodge at Sugarloaf.

A used sports equipment sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Anti-Gravity Complex. Sponsored by the academy, the sale is ranked as a No. 1 ski sale by editors of Skiing Magazine, said Rick Bisson from the academy. Proceeds benefit the Anti-Gravity Complex operations and equipment fund.

CVA will also hold a new dormitory celebration at 2:15 p.m. Saturday with tours and special alumni speaker Jeremy Jones, Class of 1993, a professional snowboarder regarded as one of the best big mountain snowboarders in the world, Bisson said.

He is also founder and executive director of Protect Our Winters, an organization that works to educate people about and to help slow down global warming, especially in relation to winter sports.

The annual homecoming auction will take place at 7:30 p.m. at The Bag & Kettle restaurant. More than 100 items will be auctioned, including ski and golf passes, dinners, lodging and gift certificates. Proceeds will benefit youth programs in the Sugarloaf area including Kingfield Recreation Committee and Western Maine Centers for Children.

A used book sale will also take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Base Lodge. Proceeds benefit the Carrabassett Public Library, Stratton Food Bank and Salem Economic Ministry.

Sunday features an uphill 3-mile climb to the top of Sugarloaf, a one-mile kid’s climb, a fall-foliage bike tour, junior Olympics and a bike ride entitled The Green Monster, a 125-mile loop from Sugarloaf to Rangeley and back.
