TURNER – A Livermore man was critically injured Tuesday when his Jeep collided with a delivery truck on Route 4.
Police said Barry Peacock, 46, suffered life-threatening injuries in the 3 p.m. crash that also left his wife and and the truck driver injured.
Peacock was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was listed in critical condition late Tuesday night.
Police investigating the accident said Peacock suffered severe trauma in the collision that flipped the delivery truck and shut down a section of Route 4 for several hours.
His wife, 52-year-old Patricia Peacock, who had been riding in the passenger seat, escaped the crash with minor injuries.
Cornelius Ware, 49, of Leeds, also suffered minor injuries when his truck collided with Peacock’s Jeep and then flipped in the roadway.
The nearly head-on crash in front of the Chick-A-Dee Restaurant happened as Peacock was driving north and Ware was heading south, police said.
“It appears the Jeep crossed over the center line into the other lane of travel, causing a collision with the … truck,” said Maine State Trooper Ricci Cote, who was leading the investigation. “It’s very early in the investigation. We’re still looking into what caused the Jeep to cross that center line.”
Ware was driving the truck for Lisbon-based New England Vending and was hauling soda and other items when he crashed, police said. No passengers were in the truck.
Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lanes, with a long path of debris scattered across the roadway. The crash occurred on a part of Route 4 that has been the site of numerous serious accidents.
Officials from Turner Rescue, the Auburn Highway Department and the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department each responded to assist the state police at the scene.
The road was closed, traffic diverted down Fern Street and Lake Shore Drive as rescuers responded and cleanup began.
State police reconstructed the crash site, using a forensic mapper with equipment capable of taking precise measurements. Route 4 was opened to traffic again in the early evening.
