PORTLAND – Ghosts, witches, goblins and other folks are expected to turn up in style for the annual Halloween Silent Film night and costume contest Friday, Oct. 26, at Merrill Auditorium. Hosted by Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ, this year’s film, “The Mark of Zorro,” directed by Douglas Fairbanks (1920), will be accompanied by guest organist Tom Trenney.

The costume contest is open to all ages and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“The Mark of Zorro” tells the story of Don Diego Vega, who becomes a sort of Robin Hood and with his sword flashing and an athletic sense of humor, scars the faces of evildoers with his mark, “Z.” He also courts the beautiful Lolita Pulido as Don Diego – but she is, of course, infatuated with the handsome Zorro. This classic film is full of plot twists and offers a blend of romance, comedy and swordfights. The film will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is a suggested $12 at the door; people under 21 admitted free.

Guest organist Tom Trenney is a graduate of the esteemed Eastman School of Music and has won many competitions, including the 2006 American Guild of Organist’s prestigious National Competition in Improvisation, where he was the first organist to win both First Prize and the Audience Prize. Known for his exciting silent film accompaniments and splendid concert performances, Trenney has performed throughout the country, including Ocean Grove Auditorium in New Jersey, the Spreckles Organ Pavilion in San Diego and the Philadelphia Orchestra’s famed Kimmel Center.
