BOSTON (AP) – Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, left off the first-round playoff roster when his sore back flared up, has been working out in case Boston makes it to the second round.

Wakefield threw the ball from 90 feet in the outfield during Thursday’s off-day workout.

“He felt better,” manager Terry Francona said Friday before Wakefield went through another warmup session in the outfield before Game 2 against the Los Angeles Angels. “That all just goes on how he’s feeling every day.”

Wakefield was 17-12 with a 4.76 ERA this season, and he was lined up to pitch out of the bullpen in the best-of-five series before an injury to the back of his shoulder flared up the day before the series opener.

Lefty Jon Lester was placed on the playoff roster instead.

If the Red Sox advance to the AL championship series and Wakefield recovers, he is expected to be the No. 4 starter.

Here’s looking at you

Garret Anderson’s right eye isn’t looking any better. Fortunately for the Los Angeles Angels, his vision has improved.

The left fielder has been suffering from conjunctivitis but was in the starting lineup for the second straight game against the Boston Red Sox in Game 2 of the AL division series.

“It looks puffier and puffier,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said, “but his vision’s getting better and better. He had an exam today. His vision’s fine.”

The cleanup hitter went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the opener and flied to centerfield to end the game.

Vladimir Guerrero, who bats third, was back in right field for the first time in a month after serving as designated hitter in Game 1. He hadn’t started there since Sept. 4 because of an irritated right forearm.

Kendry Morales filled his spot at DH and Chone Figgins, the right fielder in the opener, started in center field. Reggie Willits, who played center in the opener, didn’t start Friday night.

Flying in

Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling flew to the West Coast on Friday in preparation for the shift of the AL division series to Anaheim for Game 3.

Beckett pitched a four-hitter in Wednesday night’s 4-0 Boston Red Sox win over the Los Angeles Angels in the opener. Schilling is scheduled to start Game 3 on Sunday against Jered Weaver. Beckett would start Monday if a fourth game is needed.

“Because of the craziness in the scheduling, time changes, early start, late start, the importance of the games, they’re both leaving right now,” Boston manager Terry Francona said. “Got a big press conference tomorrow at 2:00 that we want Schill to be there for.”

“Very good,” said major league baseball vice president Phyllis Merhige, the moderator at Friday’s pregame news conference. “I like that.”
