MECHANIC FALLS – The Lamplighter smorgasbords at the First Congregational Church of Mechanic Falls will resume Saturday from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by Nov. 3 and Dec. 1.
Due to an aging and small congregation, members will be unable to continue the smorgasbords in 2008.
The money that has been raised through the years has helped to keep the church alive in the community and also helped with maintenance of the building.
The goal to rebuild the steeple and erect the bell again to be rung on Sundays and special occasions has been dashed. Due to the lack of funds, the dream will not be realized.
The First Congregational Church bell was the only church bell left to ring in Mechanic Falls.
The bell was cast by G. H. Holbrook, East Medway, Mass., in 1848.
