BANGOR (AP) – Unionized nurses at Eastern Maine Medical Center have overwhelming rejected the hospital’s latest contract offer.

More than 80 percent of the voting nurses opted to reject the proposed contract, the Maine State Nurses Association said.

A key issue is the makeup of a “professional practice committee” that would give direct-care nurses more input into staffing and other issues.

“Unit 1 nurses are standing firm in their resolve to have a real voice for their practice and the safety of their patients,” the nursing association said.

After their three-year contract expired, nurses issued a 10-day strike notice Monday, but withdrew it the following day when the two sides entered an emergency bargaining session with a federal mediator.

Hospital officials now say they’re preparing for the union to deliver the 10-day notice required before a one-day strike.
