AUBURN – Evelyn A. Groomes, 93, a resident of Pine Avenue, Livermore Falls, died Sunday, Oct. 7, at Hospice House of Androscoggin in Auburn.
She was born July 1, 1914, in Jay, the daughter of Albert and Mildred (Parker) Rich. Evelyn was a graduate of Livermore Falls High School, class of 1933 and later continued her education in public speaking in Lowell, Mass.
On July 7, 1947, she married Joseph M. Groomes Sr. Mr. Groomes passed away in 1978. Evelyn worked as a personal companion of the Sargent family of Lowell, Mass. After returning to Maine, she worked in the local shoe industry at Livermore Shoe Co. in Livermore Falls and Norwock Shoe Co. in North Jay.
Evelyn had been an active member of the Nazarene Church in Livermore Falls since 1928. The church was always an important part of her life. She enjoyed cooking and had been a contestant and former winner in the Pillsbury Bake-Off contest of Maine. Evelyn especially loved the time spent with her family and friends and will be truly missed.
She is survived by two daughters, Gail and Lucille Groomes, both of Exeter, N.H.; three sons, Joseph Groomes Jr. of Livermore, Mark Groomes and his companion, Monica Brewer, of Livermore Falls, and Stephen Groomes and his wife, Cindy, of Livermore Falls; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Smith and her husband, Harold, of Livermore Falls; and a sister-in-law, Betty Rich of Union.
She was predeceased by her parents; three sisters, Ruth Foss, Doris Longstaff and Wilma Rich; a brother, Albert Rich Jr.; two brothers-in-law, Roland Foss and Al Longstaff; and a niece, Sandra Rich.
