• SKILLINGS- The Post Office Department at Washington today gave notice that the Skillings post office will be discontinued Saturday, Oct. 12. The people living in this place will then receive their mail by free delivery from the Auburn post office. The Turner mail will be sent from the Auburn office on the Auburn-Turner electrics. C. W. Skillings, who has been postmaster here since July 1, 1899, has given excellent service.

• Lewiston and Auburn coal dealers have advanced the price of coal to $8 per ton. The advance goes into effect this morning.

• Planning consultant John T. Blackwell of Boston, Mass., in a communication apparently prompted by reports that an Auburn group plans to urge development of the Lake Auburn area, said yesterday he has never recommended any advanced development of the area. And, he issued words of caution for protection of the Lewiston-Auburn water supply.

• Nearly 700,000 more Americans sought jobless benefits late last month, the government reported Thursday. That jolt came on the eve of the highest unemployment level since the waning days of the Great Depression. For the seventh consecutive week, first-time claims for unemployment compensation checks surpassed 600,000, a level considered by economists as a clear signal of a pending rise in the overall national jobless rate.

• To honor the 75th anniversary of Scouting and the 125th birthday of its founder, Robert Baden-Powell, the Isle of Man has issued five new stamps. The Isle of Man is proud of the history it shares with the Scouting movement, and the new stamps reflect such participation.
