TOPSHAM – Marion R. (Roberts) Barrett, 82, of Lisbon Falls passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 5, at Amenity Manor.
She was born in Portland on Dec. 18, 1924, the daughter of James F. and Luella (Bard) Roberts, the oldest of eight children living on the Roberts farm in Bowdoin. She attended Lisbon schools and was to have graduated in June of 1943, but when the family Model T “quit” in January of that year, she decided she just could not walk the seven miles to school and had to drop out. After leaving school she worked in the woods with her father and grandfather and later at Worumbo Mill.
She married Roland P. Barrett on June 29, 1946, and together they raised two children. In 1958, she initiated Brownie Troop 4 and served as leader for several years. When her children were older, she worked at Richard’s Restaurant in Lisbon Falls and Jay Brush in Brunswick. Later she began baby-sitting in her home, and for 25 years she cared for scores of area children, some from infancy to high school.
She was a member of the former Holy Family Church in Lisbon Falls. She spent many years as a religious education teacher and served on the parish council and various commissions. She was a 28-year member of the Nina Rebekah Lodge 86 of Lisbon, serving many of those years as secretary. Also, she was a former member of Pioneer Chapter 11, Eastern Star of Lisbon Falls, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
In 1993 she enrolled in the Lisbon Adult Education Program and earned the necessary credits to make her dream of receiving her high school diploma a reality.
Her hobbies were knitting, sewing and she was well-known for her cake decorating, especially wedding cakes.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathie Crooker of Lisbon Falls; son James Barrett of Bowdoin; grandchildren Stephanie and husband, Byron Hartley, of Lisbon Falls, Scott Crooker and fiancee, Bobbi Arnold, of Leeds, and Eric and Diane Crooker of Auburn; great-grandchildren Jared, BrieAnna, Joshua, Abrielle Hartley, Kayla, Disantra, Elric Crooker, Lauren and Lindsay Arnold; brothers, Stanley Roberts of Portland, and Lloyd “Stub” Roberts and wife, Terry, of East Hartford, Conn.; sisters Martha and husband, Freeman Shorette, of Lisbon Falls, and Margaret “Pop” and husband, Allen Frizzle, of Bowdoinham; and many loving nieces, and nephews, especially a special niece, Christine Frizzle.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roland, in 2004; her parents; brother, James Roberts; and sisters, Doris Donahue and Joyce Denham.
A special thank-you to the staff at Amenity Manor for all their care and support.
