READFIELD – After a brief illness, David Donald Smith passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Oct. 6.

David was born on Sept. 10, 1948, to Donald and Jacqueline Mehan Smith in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. He grew up in Woodland, Maine, graduating in the Woodland High School Class of 1966 and attended Gorham State Teachers College. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Phi and founding member of the Delta Chi Fraternity on the Gorham campus.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. Wounded in Vietnam, he later served in Heidelberg, Germany. After his honorable discharge, David began a management career with various industrial electrical and mechanical contractors, culminating as vice president of Station Class Constructors, where he was part owner.

After marrying Maryann Colby on Jan. 23, 1982, they settled in Readfield.

David was a sculptor who worked in copper and produced an enormous body of work. He was an award-winning exhibitor in the Portland and Bangor flower shows. Since 1998, David was the owner of The Skunk Works Ltd. He designed, fabricated and installed artistic and architectural copper metal sculpture. He also did landscape design and construction over the past several years.

David was the chairman of the Mile of Art Committee at the University of Maine at Augusta, and had many exhibit pieces at galleries around the state of Maine.

David also taught metalworking classes for Marranacook Adult Education at his shop on the Plains Road. He participated in many gallery and art shows in New England and New York.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Maryann D. Colby, of Readfield; son, Ceth Neal Smith and his wife, Nina, and grandson, Liam Alif, of Denver Colo.; and son, Andrew Dana Smith of Denver, Colo.; and his dear baby skunk, Lily.
