MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior quarterback Zach Librizzi ran nine times, scoring on two rushing plays and passing for another pair of touchdowns, as Wesleyan bolted to a 41-21 triumph over Bates in NESCAC college football action Saturday.
The Cardinals (3-1) broke away from a 7-7 tie after the opening quarter with 21 consecutive points before the half. A 23-yard burst by sophomore Lane Kirshe finished off an impressive series, a 15-play, 90-yard drive to make it 28-7 going at intermission.
The Bobcats (0-4) came their closest when sophomore Judd Smith finished off a 63-yard, 11-play drive with a 5-yard run to knot up the game at 7-7 with 1:14 remaining in the first quarter.
Sophomore Kyle McAllister set up Bates’ second score of the game on a 38-yard interception return to the Wesleyan 30 in the third quarter. Smith scored on a 2-yard burst for the tally.
Bates closed the scoring in the final two minutes on a 21-yard connection from freshman Rayn Larsen to sophomore Sean Wirth.
Amherst 28, Colby 13
WATERVILLE – Amherst scored all 28 points in the second quarter as the Lord Jeffs held on for a 28-13 win over Colby in NESCAC football action Saturday.
Sophomore quarterback Lucas Loeffler tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Bullock for a 7-0 lead with 12:10 left to halftime. The Lord Jeffs (3-1) scored three more unanswered goals on an interception return, a fumble recovery and ensuing eight-play drive, and Loeffler’s second scoring pass of the afternoon.
The Mules (0-4) got two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on 10 and 11-play drives. Senior Captain Chris Bashaw ran in from three yards out with 11:01 to play to cap a 54-yard drive.
Quarterback Billy Ryan connected with Roger Bel on a two-yard scoring pass with 4:10 remaining to close the gap to 28-13 for Colby.
Bashaw led the Mules with 87 yard on 25 carries and teammate Dan Prunier ran for 62 yards on seven rushes.
Hamilton 23, Bowdoin 17
BRUNSWICK – Quarterback Dan Hood threw for a career-high 352 yards to lead Hamilton College to a 23-17 victory over Bowdoin in NESCAC football action.
The Continentals (1-3) scored two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 13-0 halftime lead and never trailed. Hamilton upped their lead to 20-0 immediately after intermission when Hood lobbed a passed into the corner of the end zone that was deflected by a defender and into the waiting hands of Scott Kleinklaus.
The Polar Bears (1-3) found some rhythm in the third quarter, posting consecutive scoring drives of 60 and 68 yards. Oliver Kell capped both drives with short touchdown runs, the second of which cut the lead to 20-14 with 14:55 left in the game.
Bowdoin was led by Kell, who had 193 yards passing and two rushing scores. Justin Starr collected six passes for 98 yards.
Husson 63, SUNY-Maritime 7
BANGOR – Quarterback Jonah Chappell went 8-for-17 on the day with two touchdowns to lead Husson to an easy 63-7 football triumph over SUNY-Maritime.
Freshmanr running back Justin Linde of Winslow opened the second half for Husson with a pair of touchdowns. The Eagles racked up 465 yards of total offense, forced eight turnovers and held the Pirates to 125 yards rushing.
Husson special teams player junior Ramel Barton scored on a fumble recovery in the second quarter, and blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone in the third quarter.
