RUMFORD – The Mountain Valley Middle School track is nearly complete and makes a huge difference for young students using the new facility.

John Bernard, athletic director for SAD 43, told the board Monday night that the 30-plus-year-old track was well worn and patched in places.

The $65,000 project was funded through a bond approved by district voters in June.

He said six narrow lanes were replaced by four wider ones, and the inaccurately measured 440-meter oval was replaced by a 400-meter track.

Also during his report to the board, he said two buses will be sent to the last football game of the year with Cape Elizabeth.

The Mountain Valley High School Falcons, wearing new uniforms, are undefeated. The football teams of Mountain Valley and Cape Elizabeth are the subject of a documentary film being developed by Lone Wolf Productions and is expected to paint the differences in the two Maines by using the two football teams and their towns.

In other athletic matters, Bernard told the board that participation in fall sports is particularly strong this year.

About 25 students are taking part in cheerleading, with one of the squad’s members portraying the Falcon mascot.

Another 25 girls are out for field hockey, which this year requires wearing goggles for safety. About 30 boys are participating in soccer and 38 girls, who this year have new uniforms, are on the girls soccer team.

He said the high school’s golf team, which has many first-time participants in its group of 10, went undefeated for its regular season, and fourth in the state.

As of Sept. 29, he said the new sports admission of $4 for adults and $2 for students, has brought in $15,495.
