JAY – A middle school boy faces a charge of terrorizing for making a bomb threat Monday at school, police Chief Larry White Sr. said.
The boy, listed only as being under age 14, has been issued a summons on the felony terrorizing charge, the chief said.
He also was suspended for 10 days by Principal Scott Albert, Superintendent Bob Wall said. That’s the longest suspension possible.
Police responded at 9:37 a.m. to the Jay Middle School after staff reported the threat, which was found written on a school wall, White said.
The middle school was evacuated, and the students were housed in the high school gym next door until the case was resolved about 45 minutes later, White said.
“At no time were any students in any danger, White said.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving some staff at the fifth-through-eighth-grade school and Wall.
Firefighters also helped, Wall said.
Jay officer Russell Adams, White and Detective Drew Hufnagel assisted in the case. It was concluded quickly due to the efforts of some middle school staff and Wall, White said.
Students were allowed to return to the middle school as soon as it was determined that it was safe to do so.
A letter explaining the incident was sent home with middle-schoolers for parents Monday afternoon, Wall said.
School officials followed guidelines set out in the disciplinary process, Wall said.
He also credited school staff, police and fire department personnel for helping to resolve he incident smoothly.
